Pensic magic
Aug. 7th, 2005 09:36 pmThis weekend Barb, Zan, and I went out to help our household set up for this year's Pensic War. A gathering of 10,000+ medieval re-creationists is fairly strange in itself, but it felt magical in several ways.
Yesterday as evening was falling, a mist of dust, woodsmoke, and perhaps a little fog rose over the camp. It felt a bit like Brigadood emerging from it's time-warp, especially since many of the tents in sight were medieval pavilions.
A little bit later, we had the first 360-degree sunset that I have ever seen. As the sky started coloring, the clouds were lit with pink and orange all around the horizon. The colors were just as bright in the east as in the west for quite a while. Eventually, The colors in the east dimmed and we had a more conventional sunset which was quite spectacular in it's own right.
This morning, we were sitting and having a little breakfast. When we looked out over the grassy meadow that will be the battlefield next week, we were amazed to see dramatic orange cliffs rising where none had been the day before. It was as though Bryce Canyon had been transported to Slippery Rock, PA. It took us several minutes to figure out that it was a trick of the light. The morning sun was shining through a large tree and casting strange shadows on an orange plastic fence marking the edge of the field. A trick of perspective made it look like tall orange cliffs in the distance rather than a cheap plastic fence in the foreground.
Anyway, it was a great weekend with friends. We'll be back there next week with Xavid as well. With any luck I'll be picking up a new sword so that I can fight Florentine-style (aka "case of rapier" i.e. using two swords) in the rapier melees.
