There's nothing like a long drive or two and a few nights in motels to remind me how strange "reality" is.

Since we don't have cable TV at home, I was amazed a few months ago when I discovered that there was a cable series on crab fishing in Alaska (and that it seemed to be on whenever I turned on the hotel TV).  Now I find that there's a new series on lobster fishing...  To top it off, I heard someone being interviewed on the radio who claimed that Cleveland's Walleye fishing tournament is being telecast to 500,000,000 households worldwide.   The mind boggles.

When you drive far enough out into the country, the radio stations really thin out.  Back in the old days, that meant only being able to find country music stations.  These days, it means country music, really hard rock, and strange religious stations with ads about pre-planning your funeral. Apparently we're currently in the End Times, or we're about to enter the End Times, or we should hope for the End Times.  There also is a Catholic radio network which actually was fairly interesting but which seems to be several notches to the right of the Pope.  Between the shock jocks on the hard rock stations and the End-Timers and the pre-Vatican II Catholics, there sure are a lot of people who live in a different world than I do.

Finally, the Columbus area seems to have more than it's fair share of strange aircraft in the sky.  Last time it was a large plane flying low and slow along the freeway without showing any sign of intending to land.  This time it was a large plane and four small planes flying in a very tight formation close to the ground near the freeway.  It was interesting that they didn't look like military planes but didn't really look like civilian planes either.  Do the conspiracy theorists out there have any ideas?  If I combine those sightings with the strange radio antenna arrays scattered around the countryside and the convoys of trucks carrying strangely-shaped objects, I'm sure I could come up with something good.  (Hmmm, maybe this will fit into my novel too.)

Anyway, it is good to be home again.  An evening with wife, kid, and dogs is much nicer than an evening on the road.

Besides, there's too much reality out there.
