It's so relaxing to get away and spend a little time sitting around a campfire with people you care about.

B, Z and I (or for SCAdians - M, V, and I) just got back from a short camping trip to the Allegheny National forest in western Pennsylvania. It's hard to believe that a two-day trip is such a complete change of pace.

Friday night we had plenty of time to drive to our campsite, set up camp, and relax around the fire. Saturday's weather was perfect. We took a nice long hike that went through quite a range of habitats including wildflower meadows, thigh-high ferns, deep woods, and a floating (mostly) walkway through a marsh. The hike got us back to camp in time for lunch and a nap. Then we took a shorter hike that included a very nice stream valley and got back in time for another nap. Then we had hotdogs and hamburgers cooked over the campfire and took another nap (do you detect a pattern here?).

Saturday night, a series of thunderstorms came through. There actually was very little rain but one of our dogs (Georgie) is afraid of thunder so Barb and I were sharing a tent with a dog who alternated between quivvering between us, walking on top of us, and trying to chew an exit through the side of the tent. Guess how much sleep we got.

Despite that, we woke in good moods and finished a pancake breakfast before the big thunderstorm hit. We sat it out while singing all the songs we know that contain "rain" then broke camp and went exploring. We found a very pleasant state park, took another hike that included several small waterfalls, a few wild blueberries, and a meadow with dozens of orange butterflies feeding on thistles and clover, then drove home through more thunderstorms.

Now we're home with soggy tents, dirty clothes, and a much more relaxed attitude. I recommend it highly.
